Last September, I joined Atlanta’s delegation to Cape Town during FAME Week Africa, where one of the highlights was attending the unveiling of a Nelson Mandela sculpture alongside South Africa’s Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ricardo Mackenzie, and artist Marco Olivier.
Fast forward to last week, and I had the opportunity to see a similar sculpture unveiled once again by Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ricardo Mackenzie, artist Marco Olivier, and City of Atlanta representatives, this time in the Maynard H. Jackson International Terminal at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
Created and donated by Marco Olivier, the monumental three-faced sculpture will now greet millions of travelers, including visitors arriving for the FIFA World Cup. It celebrates the enduring ties between South Africa and the United States and serves as a powerful reminder of the shared commitment to freedom, justice, and human dignity.
What made the moment even more meaningful was reconnecting with many friends. It was a reminder that international engagement is ultimately about relationships, cultural understanding, and connections that continue long after a trip ends. With the FIFA World Cup around the corner, it has been wonderful to see the relationships and collaborations that began in Cape Town continue to flourish here in Atlanta.
