As we head into the final days of the FIFA World Cup, with the semifinal between Argentina and England, Atlanta’s final match of the tournament, taking place on Wednesday, and the final match this Sunday, many of us are already starting to feel a little nostalgic.
But while the tournament is coming to an end, I hope the cultural connections and global friendships it has created are just getting started. I encourage everyone to continue these international exchanges long after the final whistle. Keep gathering with people from around the world. Continue supporting the businesses, restaurants, pubs, parks, and neighborhoods that welcomed fans and international delegates throughout the tournament. Attend cultural and business events, and take time to discover the incredible public art that tells Atlanta’s global story.
One of those lasting legacies is the Málaga Loves Atlanta mural at Vine City Station Plaza. I had the privilege of working on this project alongside the Ayuntamiento de Málaga (Malaga Tourism Authority), the Mayor’s Office of International & Immigrant Affairs – Welcoming Atlanta, and the City of Atlanta – Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs. Through this experience, I gained an entirely new appreciation for muralists and the tremendous amount of collaboration required across multiple city departments and international partners to bring a project like this to life.Watching the mural evolve from a blank concrete wall into an incredibly detailed work of art was inspiring. I was amazed by the artists’ creativity, precision, use of color, and the way they seamlessly combined traditional brushes, spray paint, and technology throughout the process (AMAZING PEOPLE).
