Global View on Smart Cities

By 2050, nearly 70 percent of the world’s population will live in cities, placing urban areas at the center of global innovation and the implementation of smart city technologies. As populations continue to grow, cities are uniquely positioned to determine which solutions will most effectively enhance quality of life, improve efficiency and sustainability, and address complex urban challenges. With strong global connectivity, close engagement with their communities, and cross-sector strategic partnerships, cities have the insight needed to deploy technology in ways that are both practical and people-centered. During the information session titled “Global View on Smart Cities,” moderated by TheSharedWorld, a conversation with Ugo Valenti, CEO and Co-Founder of Smart City Expo World Congress, and Edward Mermelstein, Commissioner of the NYC Mayor’s Office for International Affairs, reinforced that while technology remains essential, true progress depends on collaboration and the exchange of best practices among cities worldwide.

In recent years, there has been a meaningful shift from focusing solely on technological capabilities to prioritizing people and improving their everyday lives. Cities now play a critical role in listening to and amplifying the voices of their communities on the global stage, whether at international conferences or within platforms such as the United Nations.
