Why now? Why join this mission and further build these bridges between South Africa and Georgia?
Atlanta and South Africa have been engaged in ongoing discussions on how to strengthen their relationship, exploring ways for Atlanta to serve as a gateway to the United States and South Africa as a gateway to the African continent.
In 2024, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens concluded an official visit to South Africa, accompanied by a delegation of 35 Atlantan political, business, and community leaders. The visit marked a significant milestone in Atlanta Phambili, a subnational diplomacy initiative centered on deepening U.S.-South Africa partnership through the City of Atlanta, and reaffirmed the shared commitment to advancing economic, cultural, and educational collaboration between the two nations.
In 2025, the focus is on engaging multi-sector and governmental organizations to strengthen and formalize the relationship between Atlanta and South Africa’s creative industries in a strategic, sustainable, and actionable way.
Collaboration between South Africa, Atlanta, and Georgia in the creative industries presents a powerful opportunity to drive inclusive economic growth, amplify cultural influence, and foster innovation across film, music, fashion, design, and digital media.South Africaโs creative economy contributes approximately $9.3 billion (R161 billion) to its GDP and employs nearly 700,000 people, representing over 4% of the national workforce.
Meanwhile, Atlanta is one of the United Statesโ leading creative hubs. Georgiaโs creative industries generate more than $37 billion in revenue annually, with a total economic impact of $62.5 billion, and employ 89,000 people, a sector growing faster and paying more than the regional average. Innovation further strengthens this case. South Africaโs creative sector is increasingly digital, with growth in areas like gaming, 3D printing, AR/VR, and mobile storytelling. Atlantaโs robust tech ecosystem, including venture capital, film infrastructure, and media startups, creates fertile ground for collaboration through co-productions, joint ventures, incubators, and investment in creative technology.
With the global creative economy projected to reach $2 trillion and Africa poised to capture a growing share of that market, now is the time to build transcontinental creative bridges. Both regions have strong institutional and governmental support for cultural exchange and innovation. Culturally, the synergy is undeniable: Atlantaโs legacy of Black excellence, civil rights, and musical innovation intersects meaningfully with South Africaโs deep storytelling traditions and vibrant creative communities. Together, they can craft authentic Afro-Atlantic narratives with global resonance.
